How to Choose Your October Birthstone
-
Opal: watch the play of colour
Bright, even flashes across the whole stone are best. Black opal is the rarest; Ethiopian white opal gives strong colour for the price.
-
Tourmaline: pick your colour
Pink Rubellite, neon-blue Paraiba and two-tone Watermelon are the stars. At 7–7.5 Mohs, tourmaline is good for daily rings.
-
Opal needs gentle care
Opal is softer (5.5–6.5 Mohs) and dislikes heat and sudden temperature changes. Wipe it clean and never use an ultrasonic cleaner.
