Gemstone Authentication

At Raza Gems LLC, authenticity is not a marketing claim — it is a process. Every natural gemstone we sell goes through a rigorous authentication and quality verification process before it ever reaches a customer. This page explains exactly how we do it, why it matters, and what it means for you as a buyer.

Why Authentication Matters

The global gemstone market is unfortunately full of misrepresented stones — synthetic stones sold as natural, heavily treated stones sold without disclosure, lower-quality stones graded above their actual quality, and outright imitations. For a buyer without specialist knowledge, it can be nearly impossible to tell the difference without professional testing.

At Raza Gems, we believe every customer deserves to know exactly what they are buying. Our authentication process exists to give you complete confidence that the stone you purchase is precisely what we say it is — natural, genuine, and accurately described.

Our Laboratory Partners

We work with some of the most respected and internationally recognised gemological laboratories in the world. Raza Gems LLC is a registered business with all of the following laboratories, meaning our stones are accepted for testing and our certifications are recognised globally:

IGI — International Gemological Institute

One of the world's largest and most widely recognised gemological laboratories. IGI certificates are respected worldwide and provide detailed grading reports covering colour, clarity, cut, carat weight, and treatment disclosure for diamonds and coloured gemstones.

GRS — GemResearch Swisslab

A premier Swiss gemological laboratory specialising in coloured gemstones. GRS is particularly renowned for its origin determination reports — identifying whether a ruby comes from Myanmar, a sapphire from Kashmir or Ceylon, and so on. GRS certification is considered among the highest standards in the coloured gemstone industry.

Gübelin Gem Lab

One of the oldest and most prestigious gemological laboratories in the world, based in Lucerne, Switzerland. Gübelin is widely regarded as the gold standard for coloured gemstone certification, particularly for high-value rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Their origin and quality reports are recognised and respected by the world's top auction houses and dealers.

Additional Recognised Laboratories

Depending on the stone and the customer's requirements, we also work with other internationally recognised gemological testing facilities to ensure our customers receive the most appropriate and recognised certification for their purchase.

Our Step-by-Step Authentication Process

Step 1 — Initial Inspection by Our Gemstone Experts

Every stone that enters our inventory is first inspected by our in-house gemstone experts — Muhammad Kaif and Muhammad Razi — who have extensive hands-on experience identifying natural stones, detecting treatments, and assessing quality. This initial screening ensures that only stones meeting our baseline quality standards proceed further.

Step 2 — Laboratory Submission

Stones requiring certification — particularly higher-value rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and other significant coloured gemstones — are submitted to our partner laboratories (IGI, GRS, Gübelin, or others as appropriate) for independent testing. This testing is conducted entirely independently of us, ensuring an unbiased result.

Step 3 — Laboratory Testing

At the laboratory, gemologists use advanced equipment including spectroscopy, microscopy, UV-Vis absorption analysis, and other sophisticated tools to determine:

  • Whether the stone is natural or synthetic
  • The exact species and variety of the stone
  • Country or region of geographic origin (for applicable stones)
  • Whether any treatments have been applied (heating, fracture filling, beryllium diffusion, etc.) and their extent
  • Quality grading: colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight

Step 4 — Certificate Issuance

The laboratory issues an official grading report or certificate documenting all findings. This certificate accompanies the stone and is provided to the customer at the time of purchase. All certificates include a unique report number that can be verified directly on the laboratory's website.

Step 5 — Customer Delivery with Full Documentation

The certified stone, accompanied by its laboratory report and our own internal Gemstone Authenticity Report, is packaged securely and delivered to the customer. Every piece of documentation travels with the stone so the customer has a complete, verifiable record of their purchase.

What Our Certifications Cover

Depending on the stone and the laboratory used, our gemstone certifications provide verified information on:

  • Natural vs synthetic identification — 100% confirmation that the stone is natural
  • Species and variety — e.g. Ruby (Corundum), Emerald (Beryl), Yellow Sapphire (Corundum)
  • Geographic origin — where applicable and determinable
  • Treatment disclosure — full transparency on any heat treatment, fracture filling, or other enhancement
  • Colour grade — professional colour assessment
  • Clarity grade — transparency and inclusion assessment
  • Carat weight — precise weight measurement
  • Measurements — precise physical dimensions

Transparency on Treatments

Some natural gemstones undergo treatments — most commonly heat treatment for rubies and sapphires, or oil/resin filling for emeralds — that are standard, widely accepted practices in the gemstone industry. These treatments do not make a stone less natural. However, they must always be disclosed.

At Raza Gems, we disclose all known treatments on every stone we sell, in our product descriptions, in our Gemstone Authenticity Reports, and in our laboratory certificates. We never sell a treated stone as untreated. Full transparency is non-negotiable.

Our Internal Gemstone Authenticity Report

In addition to third-party laboratory certificates, Raza Gems issues our own Gemstone Authenticity Report for purchases — a formal document from us to you confirming the natural origin and quality of your stone as verified by our specialist team. This is our direct word to you, backed by our reputation and our 20+ years in the industry.

Please note: our internal report is a seller's assurance, not a substitute for a laboratory certificate. For high-value purchases, we always recommend requesting a third-party laboratory certificate.
