Buying rough: what to know
Sold by weightSingle pieces show their own carat weight. Some stones are priced per carat, so pick the weight you need.
Cutting loses weightA cut stone always weighs less than the rough it came from, so plan for that when you buy.
Look for clean areasClear, even-coloured parts of the rough are what a cutter turns into a good stone.

Our rough and raw gemstones are natural stones as they came from the ground, with no cutting. You will find moldavite, red coral, ametrine, pyrite, amethyst geodes and rough emerald, aquamarine and morganite sold by the carat. They suit gem cutters, jewellery makers and collectors.
How to choose rough gemstones
- Check the weight and size: single pieces show their own carat weight, and per-carat stones let you choose how much you need.
- Look at colour and clarity: even colour and clean areas give the best result when the stone is cut.
- Expect weight loss when cutting: a finished stone always weighs less than the rough, so allow for it.
- Ask for more photos: we can send extra photos or a video of any piece before you buy.
