About Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj)
Yellow sapphire is corundum in tones from pale lemon to rich golden yellow, mainly coloured by iron. It shares the hardness of all sapphires, 9 on the Mohs scale, so it keeps its polish well.
- Mineral: Corundum
- Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale
- Main sources: Sri Lanka, Thailand, Madagascar, Australia, Tanzania
- Treatments: Many yellow sapphires are heated, and some are beryllium-diffused for a stronger colour; ask us for the lab report on any stone to see its treatment.
- Care: Wash with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and store it apart from softer gems so it does not scratch them.
