About Turquoise
Turquoise is an opaque copper aluminium phosphate in sky blue to green, often with brown or black veins called matrix. It is porous and fairly soft, so it needs gentle handling.
- Mineral: Turquoise (phosphate)
- Hardness: 5–6 on the Mohs scale
- Main sources: Iran, USA (Arizona, Nevada), China, Mexico, Egypt
- Treatments: Much turquoise is stabilised with resin or wax, and some is dyed or reconstituted; ask us about any piece to see its treatment.
- Care: Keep turquoise away from oils, perfume, cosmetics and water, and clean it with a dry soft cloth.
