About Amethyst
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, coloured by iron and natural radiation in the earth. It ranges from light lilac to deep violet and is widely available in larger sizes.
- Mineral: Quartz
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale
- Main sources: Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar, Bolivia
- Treatments: Amethyst is usually untreated, though some is heated to lighten dark colour; ask us for the lab report on any stone to see its treatment.
- Care: Clean with warm soapy water, and keep it away from heat and long exposure to strong sunlight, which can fade it.
