About Rubellite Tourmaline
Rubellite is the pink to red variety of tourmaline that keeps its colour in both daylight and indoor light. Inclusions are common in this variety, so eye-clean stones are harder to find.
- Mineral: Tourmaline (elbaite)
- Hardness: 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale
- Main sources: Brazil, Nigeria, Mozambique, Madagascar, Afghanistan
- Treatments: Rubellite is sometimes heated or irradiated to improve colour, and some stones are fracture-filled; ask us for the lab report on any stone to see its treatment.
- Care: Clean with warm soapy water, and avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners and sudden heat.
