About Opal
Opal is hydrated silica made of tiny spheres that split light into flashes of colour, called play-of-colour. Main types include white, black, crystal and fire opal.
- Mineral: Opal (hydrated silica)
- Hardness: 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale
- Main sources: Australia, Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil
- Treatments: Some opal is stabilised or treated to darken its background, and thin opal may be sold as doublets or triplets; ask us about any stone to see its treatment.
- Care: Keep opal away from heat, sudden temperature changes and ultrasonic cleaners, and wipe it with a soft damp cloth rather than soaking it.
