About Blue Sapphire (Neelam)
Blue sapphire is corundum coloured by iron and titanium, in shades from light cornflower to deep royal blue. At 9 on the Mohs scale it resists scratches well and suits everyday rings.
- Mineral: Corundum
- Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale
- Main sources: Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Australia
- Treatments: Most blue sapphires are heated to improve colour and clarity, and some are diffused; ask us for the lab report on any stone to see its treatment.
- Care: Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe for untreated stones without fractures.
