About Sapphire
Sapphire is gem corundum in every colour except red, which is called ruby. Blue is the best known, but sapphire also comes in yellow, pink, green, purple, orange and colourless.
- Mineral: Corundum
- Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale
- Main sources: Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Australia, Tanzania
- Treatments: Heating is the most common sapphire treatment, and some stones are diffused; ask us for the lab report on any stone to see its treatment.
- Care: Wash with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and store it apart from softer gems so it does not scratch them.
