18K vs 22K Gold (and 21K) for Gemstone Jewellery
18K gold is harder and holds gemstones more securely, while 21K and 22K give a deeper colour but are softer. Compare purity, durability, colour, white and rose gold, and how UAE hallmarks work.

In the 18K vs 22K gold question, 18K is the better choice for most gemstone jewellery. It is 75% gold and noticeably harder, so prongs and settings hold stones more securely. 22K (91.6% gold) has a deeper yellow colour and more gold per gram, but it is soft — great for plain gold pieces, less ideal for holding valuable stones day after day. 21K (87.5%) sits in between and is popular across the Gulf.
Here is how the three compare on purity, strength, colour and hallmarks, so you can pick the right gold for your stone.
Gold Purity Explained: What 18K, 21K and 22K Mean
Gold purity is measured in parts out of 24. Pure gold is 24K. The rest of the metal is an alloy — usually silver, copper, zinc or palladium — added for strength and colour.
In the UAE, the legal gold standards are set by federal law, with each karat matched to a "parts per thousand" figure. That number is what you will see stamped on the piece.
| Karat | Gold content | Stamp (parts per 1,000) | Alloy metals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | 999 | Almost none |
| 22K | 91.6% | 916 | About 8.4% |
| 21K | 87.5% | 875 | 12.5% |
| 18K | 75.0% | 750 | 25% |
Quick note on words: gold purity is written "K" (karat), while gemstone weight is measured in carats (ct). They are two different things that sound the same.
Durability: Which Gold Holds Stones Best?
Pure gold is very soft. The more alloy you add, the harder and more scratch-resistant the metal becomes. That is the single most important point for gemstone jewellery.
- 18K: the hardest of the three. Prongs stay firm, edges keep their shape, and fine work like pavé and micro-claws is practical.
- 21K: softer than 18K. Works well for bezel and closed settings, and for traditional designs with heavier metal around the stone.
- 22K: the softest. Thin prongs can bend or wear down over time, and stones are more likely to loosen in everyday wear.
Why Soft Gold Is Risky for Prongs
A prong is a thin wire of metal holding a stone at a few points. In soft gold it can be pushed back by a knock, catch on clothing, or slowly wear thin.
Once a prong lifts, the stone can fall out without you noticing. That is a small repair on a plain band, but a real loss with a fine sapphire or emerald.
If you love the colour of 22K, choose a bezel or closed setting with plenty of metal around the stone. For how gold compares with other metals in stone rings, see gold, silver or platinum for stone rings.
Colour: How Each Karat Looks
Higher karat means more gold, and more gold means a richer, warmer yellow.
- 22K: deep, buttery yellow — the classic look of Gulf and South Asian bridal gold.
- 21K: rich yellow, very close to 22K to most eyes.
- 18K yellow: a slightly softer, paler yellow. Many people find it suits a wide range of gem colours.
Matching Gold Colour to Your Stone
- Yellow gold warms up rubies, yellow sapphires, emeralds and citrine.
- White gold keeps blue sapphires, aquamarines and white stones looking crisp and cool.
- Rose gold flatters pink stones such as morganite, pink sapphire and spinel.
18K vs 22K Gold Side by Side
| Point | 18K | 21K | 22K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold content | 75% | 87.5% | 91.6% |
| Hardness | Highest of the three | Medium | Softest |
| Holds prong-set stones | Best | OK with care | Not ideal |
| Colour | Soft yellow; also white and rose | Rich yellow | Deep yellow |
| Price per gram | Lowest | Middle | Highest |
| Best for | Gemstone rings, daily wear, fine settings | Gulf-style jewellery, bezel-set stones | Plain gold, bridal sets, occasional wear |
White Gold and Rose Gold Alloys
Coloured gold is made by changing the alloy, not the gold. That is why white and rose gold are mostly made in 18K and lower — at 22K there simply is not enough alloy to change the colour much.
White Gold
- Made with: gold mixed with white metals, usually palladium or nickel.
- Rhodium plating: most white gold is plated with rhodium for a bright white finish. This wears over time and can be re-plated.
- Sensitive skin: if nickel bothers your skin, ask for palladium white gold. Our guide on metals for sensitive ears covers this in more detail.
Rose Gold
- Made with: gold plus a higher share of copper, which gives the pink tone.
- Strength: copper makes rose gold fairly hard, so it holds stones well.
- Colour: the more copper, the deeper the pink.
For more on how alloys create each colour, see the coloured gold overview on Wikipedia.
Price and Value: What You Are Paying For
Gold jewellery prices in the UAE usually follow the daily gold rate for that karat, plus a making charge for the work. Gemstones are priced on top.
- Gold content: 22K costs more per gram than 18K because each gram holds more gold. You can check today's figures on our gold rates page.
- Making charge: detailed settings and handwork cost more to make, whatever the karat.
- Weight: a heavier mounting uses more gold. Soft 22K designs often need more metal to be strong enough.
- The stone: in a gemstone ring, the stone is often the bigger part of the value. That is a strong reason to set it in metal that keeps it safe.
Think about the whole piece. Saving on a soft setting is false economy if the stone works loose.
UAE Hallmarking: How to Check Your Gold
The UAE controls gold purity through Federal Law No. 11, which controls the trade in precious stones and metals and their hallmarking. You can read the law on the official UAE Legislation portal.
What the Law Says
- Legal standards: gold is recognised at 24K (999), 22K (916), 21K (875), 18K (750), 16K (666), 14K (583) and 12K (500).
- Hallmark required: finished pieces offered for sale must carry the official UAE hallmark or a recognised foreign hallmark.
- Too small to stamp: if a piece has no room for a hallmark, it must come with an identification card instead.
- Who stamps: hallmarking is done by bodies accredited or registered with the ministry.
What the Official Hallmark Shows
Under the law's executive regulations, the official UAE hallmark has three parts:
- A metal mark: a falcon for gold (a castle is used for silver and a palm tree for platinum).
- A purity mark: the fineness, such as 750 for 18K or 916 for 22K.
- The hallmarking body's mark: showing who tested and stamped it.
Practical Checks in the Shop
- Look inside the band or on the clasp with a loupe for the purity number.
- Ask for a tax invoice that states the karat, gold weight and stone weight separately.
- Ask about the stones too. The hallmark covers the metal, not the gem. For a valuable stone, ask for the lab report — see our certifications page for what a report should show.
Which Gold Should You Choose?
- Everyday gemstone ring or engagement ring: 18K. It holds stones best and comes in yellow, white and rose.
- Soft or brittle stones like emerald, opal or tanzanite: 18K in a protective setting.
- Traditional Gulf look with a bezel-set stone: 21K can work well.
- Plain gold bangles, chains or bridal sets: 22K, if you want the deepest colour and highest gold content.
At Raza Gems we sell 18K gold jewellery alongside gold and silver pieces. You can browse gemstone rings and the wider jewellery collection, or plan your own piece through custom orders.
FAQs
Is 18K or 22K gold better for a gemstone ring?
18K is usually better. It is harder than 22K, so prongs stay tight and the stone is less likely to loosen. 22K is better suited to plain gold or heavy bezel designs.
Does 22K gold bend easily?
It is softer than 18K and 21K, so thin parts like prongs, ear posts and fine chains can bend or wear faster. Thicker, solid designs in 22K are fine for regular wear with care.
What does 750, 875 and 916 mean on gold?
These are purity stamps in parts per thousand. 750 is 18K (75% gold), 875 is 21K (87.5% gold) and 916 is 22K (91.6% gold).
Can you get 22K white gold?
Not really. White gold needs a large share of white alloy metals to look white, and 22K leaves too little room for that. White gold is normally made in 18K or lower.
How do I know gold jewellery in the UAE is genuine?
Check for the hallmark: the official UAE mark includes a falcon for gold, a purity number and the hallmarking body's mark, or the piece may carry a recognised foreign hallmark. Also ask for an invoice stating the karat and weights.
