The best day to wear coral stone is Tuesday, and the best time is the morning, between sunrise and 9:00 AM (ideally 5:00 to 9:00 AM). In Vedic astrology, coral, also called Moonga, is linked with Mars (Mangal), and Tuesday is the day of Mars.
Mars stands for energy, ambition and determination, so many people wear coral as a symbol of strength, courage and protection. This guide covers the right day and time, how to activate coral before you wear it, the correct way to wear it and how to check if it suits you. You can see real stones in our coral (Moonga) collection.
What is coral stone?
An organic gem. Coral is not a mineral gemstone like diamond or ruby. It is made from the skeletons of tiny sea creatures called coral polyps, which build up over thousands of years into structures in the ocean. These are later harvested and shaped into gems and jewellery.
Types of coral and their traditional meanings:
- Red coral: strength, courage and energy.
- Pink coral: love and peace.
- White coral: spiritual growth and mental clarity.
- Black coral: protection against negativity and evil forces.
Why timing matters when wearing coral
Like planting a seed in the right season. In astrology, wearing a gemstone at the right moment is believed to strengthen its link to its planet. For coral, that planet is Mars.
The wrong timing. Tradition says coral worn on the wrong day or at the wrong time may not work well, and could even bring anger or money troubles.
The best day to wear coral stone
Tuesday, the day of Mars
The most auspicious day. Tuesday (Mangalwar) is ruled by Mars. Wearing coral on this day is believed to align it with Mars's influence, for confidence, success and protection.
Other special days
- Navratri and Mangalwar Purnima: sacred days believed to strengthen the energy of Mars.
- Days when Mars is strong: an astrologer can check your birth chart for the best day based on the position of Mars.
The best time to wear coral stone
Morning, from sunrise to 9:00 AM
Between 5:00 and 9:00 AM. The early morning is seen as a spiritually strong time that helps energise the stone.
Avoid Rahu Kaal
An unlucky window. Rahu Kaal is a period seen as inauspicious in astrology. Its timing changes every day, so check the local Rahu Kaal before you put on your coral.
How to activate coral stone before wearing it
Why activate it? Tradition compares a new coral to a battery that needs charging and tuning to your energy. Activation is believed to:
- Remove any negative energy the stone picked up before it reached you.
- Align the stone's natural vibrations with your own energy.
- Strengthen its role as a protective stone.
Step 1: Cleanse the coral
- Milk, honey and Gangajal (traditional method): mix raw milk, honey and Gangajal (holy water) in a small bowl. Soak the coral for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse it in clean water and wipe it dry with a soft cloth.
- Rice bowl: bury the coral in a bowl of uncooked rice overnight. The rice is believed to absorb negative energy. Throw the rice away the next day.
Step 2: Charge the coral
- Morning sunlight: place the coral in soft morning sun for 1 to 2 hours. Many people repeat this once a month to refresh the stone. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, as too much heat can damage coral.
- Full moon: leave it outside or by a window overnight on a full moon night, for calm and peace.
- Sound: hold the coral near a Tibetan singing bowl, bells or gentle chanting for a few minutes.
Step 3: Chant the Mars mantra and set your intention
- The mantra: hold the stone and chant the Mars Beej Mantra, "Om Angarakaya Namah" (ॐ अङ्गारकाय नमः), 108 times.
- Your intention: close your eyes, breathe deeply and say your intention aloud or in your mind. For example: "This coral is my protector. It will bring me strength and courage."
- Picture it: imagine the stone glowing with a bright light.
- Put it on: wear the ring while sitting in a quiet place, facing East.
How to wear coral stone correctly
Which metal
- Best: gold or copper.
- Avoid: silver or platinum, which tradition says do not suit Mars's energy.
Which finger
Ring finger of the right hand. Left-handed people can wear it on the ring finger of the left hand.
Ring, pendant or pocket stone
- Ring: the most common choice, for energy and protection.
- Pendant: keeps the stone close to your heart.
- Pocket: if you do not wear jewellery, carry it with you as a protective charm.
How to know if coral suits you
Try it for a few days
The pillow test. Before wearing coral for good, keep it under your pillow for 3 to 4 nights. Tradition says that if you have bad dreams or feel angry or uneasy, it may not suit you.
Ask an astrologer
Check your birth chart. An experienced astrologer can see whether coral fits your planetary positions.
Watch for changes
Notice how life feels. If you feel confident and successful, tradition says it is working for you. If you face anger or money problems, take it off and speak to your astrologer.
Who should avoid wearing coral stone?
- Some zodiac signs: Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra and Aquarius should avoid coral unless an astrologer advises otherwise.
- A weak Mars: if Mars is weak in your birth chart, coral may not be beneficial.
- Clashing gemstones: do not wear coral with emerald, blue sapphire or diamond, as their planetary energies are said to clash.
How to care for your coral stone
- Clean it gently: every 2 weeks, wipe your coral ring with lukewarm water and a soft cloth.
- Avoid chemicals: keep coral away from soap, perfume and harsh chemicals, which can damage it.
- Refresh it monthly: use the soft morning sunlight method from Step 2 above.
