Buying gemstones in Dubai goes well when you come prepared. Check every stone in good light, ask for a lab report on any important stone, and get a detailed tax invoice before you pay. Visitors can also claim back part of the VAT at the airport when they leave the UAE, if the shop is in the refund scheme.
The Gold Souq in Deira is the most famous place to start. This guide explains how it works and how to buy with confidence.
How the Gold Souq works
The Gold Souq sits in the Al Ras area of Deira, close to Dubai Creek. It is a network of covered lanes with hundreds of shops side by side.
- What you will find: mostly gold jewellery, plus gemstones, gem-set pieces and silver.
- How gold is priced: by weight. You pay the day's gold rate per gram for that karat, plus a making charge for the work, plus VAT.
- How gems are priced: loose stones usually by the carat. In set jewellery, the stone value is added on top of the gold.
- Opening hours: these vary by shop, so check before you go.
- Street approaches: people in the lanes may offer to take you to a "special" shop. It is simpler to walk into a shop yourself.
You can check the daily rate on our gold rates page. If units confuse you, our guide to carats, grams, tola and rati helps.
Buying gemstones in Dubai: a quick checklist
- Set a budget and know which stone you want.
- Learn the basics of that stone: colour, common treatments and look-alikes.
- Bring a light: your phone torch is fine. A 10x loupe is even better.
- Carry your passport if you plan to claim the VAT refund.
- Take your time. Visit two or three shops before you decide.
How to check a gemstone in the shop
- Look in more than one light. Shop lights flatter stones. Ask to see the stone near daylight or under plain white light.
- Use a loupe. Most natural stones show tiny inclusions. A flawless stone at a low price may be lab-grown or glass.
- Ask direct questions. Is it natural or lab-grown? Is it treated, and how? Is the origin on the report?
- Check the weight. Ask to see the stone weighed in carats and compare it with the invoice.
- Compare. Seeing a few stones side by side trains your eye fast.
| You ask for | It could really be | How to protect yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | Glass-filled ruby, garnet or lab-grown ruby | Ask about treatment; get a lab report on valuable stones |
| Blue sapphire | Lab-grown sapphire, diffusion-treated stone or glass | Ask natural or lab-grown; check the report's treatment line |
| Emerald | Glass, lab-grown emerald or heavily filled stone | Ask how much oil or filler; check the report |
| Diamond | Lab-grown diamond, moissanite or cubic zirconia | Ask for a grading report and check it matches |
| Tanzanite | Glass or other look-alike crystals | Buy with a report for larger stones |
Ask for a lab report, then check it
Any stone whose price depends on being natural, untreated or from a famous origin should come with a lab report. For small, low-cost stones, a clear written description on the invoice may be enough.
- Verify the number: check the report number on the lab's own website where possible.
- Match the stone: weight, size, shape and colour on the report should match what you hold.
- Read the treatment line: "heated", "no indications of heating" and "filled" mean very different prices.
- Be careful with unknown labs: a "certificate" printed by the seller is not independent.
At Raza Gems we show the lab report on major stones, and any good shop should be happy to do the same. Our certifications page and gemstone authentication guide explain what to look for.
Bargaining: what is normal
- Gold rate: set daily and generally not open to discount.
- Making charges: this is where most discussion on gold happens.
- Gemstones: talking about price is normal. Stay polite and know what similar stones cost elsewhere.
- Payment method: the price can differ for cash and card, so ask.
- No pressure: walking away is fine. A good stone will still be there after a coffee.
- Final price in writing: confirm whether it includes VAT before you pay.
Gold hallmarks in Dubai
In Dubai, gold hallmarks are approved by the Dubai Central Laboratory, part of Dubai Municipality. Gulf News explains that a hallmark shows the karat, the maker's mark and a certification number.
| Karat | Gold purity | Common stamp | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | 999 | Bars and coins; too soft for most jewellery |
| 22K | 91.6% | 916 | Traditional jewellery |
| 21K | 87.5% | 875 | Popular jewellery across the Gulf |
| 18K | 75% | 750 | Gem-set and detailed designs |
Look for the stamp with your loupe, usually on the clasp or inside a ring. The karat and gold weight should also appear on your invoice.
Get the right receipt
A proper tax invoice protects you at customs, for insurance and if anything goes wrong. Make sure it shows:
- Shop details: name, address and tax registration number (TRN).
- Stone details: type, natural or lab-grown, treatment, carat weight and shape.
- Metal details: karat and gold weight in grams.
- Price breakdown: gold rate, making charge, stone value and VAT shown separately.
- Return or exchange terms, in writing.
Keep the original lab report with the invoice.
VAT refund for tourists: how it works
The UAE charges 5% VAT, and gold jewellery is taxable. Visitors can claim part of it back through the official Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme. According to the UAE government's VAT refund page:
- Who: tourists and visitors aged 18 or over who take the goods out of the UAE.
- Which shops: only retailers registered in the scheme. Ask before you pay.
- Minimum spend: AED 250 for a tax-free purchase.
- Time limit: validate at the airport, seaport or land border within 90 days of purchase.
- What to show: your passport, tax invoices, tax-free tags and the goods themselves.
- How much: 85% of the VAT paid, minus a fee of AED 4.80 per tax-free tag.
- How you are paid: cash in dirhams or a refund to your card.
Tips for a smooth claim
- Give the shop your passport details so the tax-free tag is linked to you.
- Keep the goods in your hand luggage, because staff may ask to see them.
- Validate before you check in your bags.
- Check the official page again before you travel, as rules can change.
High-purity investment gold, such as bars and coins, is generally zero-rated in the UAE, so there may be no VAT to reclaim. Ask the shop how your item was taxed.
Leaving the UAE with valuable stones
- Declare large values: the UAE customs guidance says travellers leaving or entering with more than AED 60,000 in cash, precious metals or valuable stones must declare it. This can be done online or through the Afseh app.
- Check your home country: import duty and allowances differ by country.
- Carry paperwork: keep invoices and lab reports with you, not in checked bags.
- Consider shipping: for very valuable pieces, insured shipping can be simpler. See our shipping policy for how it works.
Gold Souq or a showroom?
The souq gives you choice and easy comparison, but it can be busy and fast-paced. A showroom is quieter and gives you more time to examine stones in good light.
Many dealers have both. For example, Raza Gems has a branch in the Gold Souq (Al Ras, Deira, open daily 10:00 to 22:00) and a main showroom at Gold & Diamond Park in Al Quoz (open daily 10:00 to 21:00). Details are on our branches page. To understand why the city became a trading centre, read how the Dubai gemstone market became a global hub.
FAQs
Is it cheaper to buy gemstones in Dubai?
It can be good value because many dealers compete in one place. But price follows quality, not the city. Compare similar stones and check the paperwork before you decide.
Can tourists get VAT back on jewellery in Dubai?
Yes, if the shop is registered in the Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme and you meet the conditions. You validate at the airport, seaport or land border within 90 days and receive 85% of the VAT, minus a small fee per tag.
Is gold from the Gold Souq real?
Licensed shops in Dubai must sell hallmarked gold approved by the Dubai Central Laboratory. Check the karat stamp on the piece and make sure the karat and weight are on your invoice.
Do I need a certificate for a gemstone bought in Dubai?
For valuable stones, yes. A report from an established lab confirms whether the stone is natural and treated. Check that the report number and details match the stone.
Can I bargain at the Gold Souq?
Yes, within reason. The daily gold rate is fixed, but making charges and gemstone prices are often open to polite discussion. Always confirm the final price, including VAT, in writing.
