Is It Cheaper to Buy a Loose Stone and Create a Custom Ring?

Short answer: usually, yes. Buy a loose stone and create a custom ring around it, and you will normally pay less than a ready-made ring holding the same quality stone. Often noticeably less.

The catch is the word “same”. Tiny stones, busy designs and rush orders can flip the maths. Below are the real 2026 numbers, from a workshop that has been setting stones in Dubai since 2005, so you can decide in five minutes.

Why Buying a Loose Stone and Creating a Custom Ring Often Costs Less

One markup instead of two. A ready-made ring bundles the stone, the metal, the labour and the shop’s margin into a single price tag. Trade references put typical retail pricing at 2 to 3 times wholesale for loose coloured stones, but 3 to 5 times wholesale for finished jewellery (Skyjems gem encyclopedia). Buy the stone loose and the bigger multiplier never touches your gold or your labour.

You pay for what you can see. A loose stone sits in your hand, next to its lab certificate. You check colour, clarity, cut and treatment before any money moves. Inside a finished ring, prongs can hide a chip and a closed-back setting can hide a colour trick.

Gold is priced by weight, not by “design”. In Dubai, gold is sold the honest way: today’s rate, multiplied by grams, plus a making charge. On 21 September 2026, 18K gold in Dubai was about AED 400 per gram (UAE Gold Price). A 4-gram solitaire mount is roughly AED 1,600 of metal, and you can check that maths yourself on our live gold rates page.

Nothing sits in a showcase for months. Stock costs money. Trade estimates put the cost of carrying jewellery inventory at 5 to 15 per cent of its value every year (Skyjems), and that cost is baked into every ready-made price tag. A custom ring is made when you order it.

What a custom ring really costs in 2026

Here is the honest breakdown, line by line. Ranges are indicative, and Dubai making charges usually sit below the Western figures quoted.

The stone

The biggest single line in most centre-stone rings we make, often more than metal and labour combined

Variety, carat, colour, origin, treatment, certificate

Metal (18K gold)

3 to 6 g × today’s rate ≈ AED 1,200 to 2,400

Band width, ring size, halo or not

Stone setting labour

Prong US$40 to 100, bezel US$60 to 130, pavé US$150 to 350 in Western workshops (Tashvi)

Setting style, number of stones, stone hardness

Design and CAD

US$225 to 1,600 per ring in Western studios (Tashvi); many Dubai workshops fold it into the making charge

Complexity, number of revisions

US$30 to 80 for casting, plus polishing (Tashvi)

Metal, rhodium plating on white gold

Where you buy and where you fly

The same sapphire, two doors

Follow one stone through both routes. Say a dealer’s cost for a sapphire is AED 2,000, and a simple 18K mount costs AED 1,000 in gold and labour.

Ready-made door. Finished coloured-stone jewellery typically retails at 3 to 5 times cost. The ring lands at roughly AED 9,000 to 15,000.

Loose-stone door. The same stone sold loose at 2 to 3 times cost is AED 4,000 to 6,000. Add a workshop mount priced by gold weight plus a making charge, roughly AED 1,500 to 3,000 for a simple 18K solitaire. The ring lands at roughly AED 5,500 to 9,000.

Same stone. Same gold. The difference is simply which multiplier the shop applied to the metal and the labour. The figures are illustrative, but the shape of the saving is real.

When a ready-made ring is actually cheaper

Custom does not win every time. Be honest about which of these is you.

Very small stones. Below about 0.3 carat, the setting fee can cost more than the stone. Factories set those stones in batches, and the batch price wins.

Busy designs. Halo, pavé and channel settings mean dozens of tiny stones set by hand. That is skilled labour before you have paid for a single stone, and a factory making 500 identical rings spreads it thin.

Sale racks and clearance. A finished ring the shop wants gone can drop below its own cost. If you are flexible on the stone, that is a genuine bargain.

Deadline shopping. A custom ring takes weeks, not minutes. If the proposal is on Saturday, ready-made is the only door open.

Famous names. Branded rings can carry markups in the region of 200 per cent (Beyond4Cs). Neither route is cheap once a logo is involved.

Hidden costs to check before you commit

These are the lines that turn a good quote into a surprise. Ask about every one.

Design revisions. Two rounds are usually free. Ten are not.

The certificate. A lab report from GIA, IGI or GRS is worth having, and worth asking the price of upfront.

Resizing. A ring made to your finger should not need it. Confirm the policy anyway.

Shipping and insurance. A loose stone plus a finished ring can mean two shipments. One workshop that does both means one.

VAT and duties. 5 per cent VAT in the UAE, plus import duty if you are shipping home.

Stone safety. Emerald, opal and tanzanite are softer and can chip during setting in careless hands. Choose a bezel or a protective setting, and a setter who works with coloured stones daily. Our Mohs hardness guide shows which stones survive everyday wear.

7 ways to keep a custom ring cheap

1. Buy the stone first, from a stone dealer. The stone is the biggest line, so it is the line worth shopping hardest. Start with certified loose gemstones, not a ring case.

2. Let the stone lead the design. A mount drawn around the stone you own wastes no metal and needs no compromise. A stone squeezed into a pre-drawn design often does.

3. Keep the mount simple. Solitaire, bezel or three-stone. Every extra prong, stone and curl is labour.

4. Ask for the gold weight in grams. Then multiply by the day’s rate. If the quote will not break down that way, ask why.

5. Compare metals by the gram, not by habit. With gold near record highs in 2026, 14K, 18K and platinum do not sit where they used to. Ask for two quotes.

6. Consider the sister stone. Spinel instead of ruby. A Sri Lankan sapphire instead of a Kashmir one. Same colour on the finger, a very different number on the invoice.

7. Get one written quote for everything. Design, metal, setting, certificate, resizing and shipping, on one page, before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy a loose diamond and have it set?

Usually, yes, for the same reason. Online loose diamonds are typically marked up under 20 per cent, while finished and branded jewellery carries far more (Beyond4Cs). Buy the diamond on its certificate, then pay for the mount separately.

How much does it cost to set a stone in a ring?

For a single stone in a simple prong or bezel mount, Western workshops charge roughly US$40 to 130 in labour (Tashvi). Dubai making charges are usually lower. At Raza Gems, setting is part of one all-in quote, not a separate surprise.

Can I bring my own stone to a jeweller?

Most workshops will set an outside stone. Expect a setting fee, and ask two questions first: who is responsible if the stone chips during setting, and has the setter worked with that variety before.

Does a custom ring hold its value?

The stone and the gold hold value. Labour rarely comes back on resale, and a design fee never does. That is true of ready-made rings too, unless the name on the box is famous.

How long does a custom ring take?

Usually a few weeks from approved design to finished ring. We walk through every step in I have a ring design in my head. How do I get it made?

The bottom line

For the same stone, custom usually wins. You skip the finished-jewellery markup, you see exactly what you are paying for, and the gold is priced by the gram.

Ready-made wins on small stones, busy designs and tight deadlines. Know which ring you are buying before you decide which door to use.
